Why Rory?

Bringing the perspective of today’s working families to Sidney Council.

Why I’m Running

As a parent raising a family in Sidney, I’m dealing with the same affordability, housing and healthcare challenges that our residents face every day.

My family chose to live in Sidney because it’s one of the best communities in British Columbia to live, work, and raise children.

Today, many residents are asking important questions:

Will our children be able to afford to stay here?
How do we attract more healthcare services to our community?
How can we improve transportation options?
How do we support local businesses while keeping Sidney’s character intact?

These are not just policy issues to me. They are challenges I see and experience as a resident, parent, and public servant.

I am running to bring a practical, future-focused perspective to Council and help ensure Sidney remains a community where people of all ages can thrive.

I will use my public service experience to focus on practical solutions for housing, healthcare, affordability and transportation.

My professional background is diverse, but a common theme runs through everything I’ve done: helping people solve problems.

My experience includes:

  • Public service with the Province of British Columbia
  • Information technology and digital services
  • Small business ownership
  • Education and teaching
  • Communications and creative services

The public technology sector has taught me how to analyze complex problems, improve services, and find practical solutions.

Working in Education showed me the importance of listening, communicating clearly, and helping people understand difficult issues.

Running a business provided me firsthand experience with budgeting, customer service, and making difficult decisions while balancing priorities.

Together, these experiences have given me a well-rounded perspective that I believe would be valuable on Council.

Let’s Keep Sidney Special

Sidney is already a great community.

My goal isn’t to change what makes it great.

My goal is to help ensure it remains welcoming, vibrant, affordable, and connected for generations to come.

I’d be honoured to earn your support.

About Rory

My youngest, enjoying one of Sidney’s many hidden gems

I grew up on Vancouver Island and have lived in Sidney for over 12 years.

My first direct experience with politics was presenting to Sooke Council as the youth representative for the Family Resource Society.

Before settling down in Sidney, I split my early adulthood between the UK and Canada. I started in IT before the iPhone existed, and YouTube was still a few years away. One memorable early job was managing a multi-media lab for an East London Sixth Form College.

Returning to Canada I started my own successful Photography business, before transitioning into the technical side of on-location film and TV work.

I have volunteered my photography, and technical production skills, to various community festivals and music events, and even a political campaign over the years. I also taught community classes in beginner backpacking, and GPS Navigation, for Mountain Equipment Co-Op (RIP).

Inspired by the tranquility that is life in Sidney, and the demands of being a parent to two young children, I’ve transitioned into an IT professional with the Government of BC.

My family and I live on 5th Street, a shortish walk from Beacon Ave, and not too far from the library. In between work, and tracking down over-due books, we enjoy hiking, camping and skiing in the winter.

    Priorities

Building a more affordable, connected and healthy community.

Sidney has given my family a wonderful place to live, work and raise children. I am running for Council to help ensure future generations can do the same.

    Affordability
The cost of living in Canada is not going down anytime soon. I want to help the Town of Sidney keep property taxes manageable, and support local business via increasing foot traffic.

Let’s look into increasing non-tax revenue, and improving service capacity.

    Housing
Managing housing availability in Sidney is key to our town’s future. Let’s make sure that existing Sidney residents are not priced out of the town they love. Increasing housing availability also means local business have an easier time finding staff.

Wider housing options and better land use does not mean skyscrapers on every block. There are so many ways we can use Sidney’s amazing natural location as an advantage.

    Healthcare
Finding a doctor in BC is almost impossible, and Sidney is no exception. I will advocate for The Town of Sidney to setup a municipally run healthcare practice.

Doctors want to focus on keeping people healthy, so if we build it, they will come. The best part? The Province pays us to improve our own services.

    Transportation
Sidney’s location as transportation “hub” is great, but there is much room for improvement. Full buses passing through town is not a healthy service. I will be an advocate for more buses that serve Sidney directly.

I want to make sure that improving one style of transportation does not adversely effect the way Sidney residents already get around. Add and extend, as opposed to replace.

If elected to council, I will look into all options for Sidney to support the reactivation of the Washington State Ferry. Every year the terminal sits idle is a missed opportunity for residents and business alike.
